The Road to Formentor
Short on paper, unforgettable in the legs.
Out of the shop and straight onto the cliff road to the lighthouse. Short brutal ramps, a viewpoint above turquoise water and 864 metres of climbing packed into under forty kilometres. Ride it early, before the buses.
What to expect
The road to Cap de Formentor starts almost at our door. It climbs out of Port de Pollença to the Mirador des Colomer viewpoint, drops across the peninsula and rises again on the way to the lighthouse at the tip. It is a short ride by kilometres, but with more than 800 metres of climbing it is a proper workout.
Timing matters
Formentor is one of the most visited places on the island. Start early: the light is better, the road is quieter and you avoid the midday heat on the exposed sections. In the high season access for private cars to the lighthouse road has in recent years been restricted at busy times, which makes the ride more pleasant — check the current rules before you go.
Ride it carefully
The road is narrow, with tight bends and steep drops on the descents back to the port. Take the descents at your own pace and watch for buses and cars stopping at the viewpoints. Bring a jacket: it can be windy and noticeably cooler near the lighthouse.
Best for
Riders who want one scenic climb, photographers, half-day rides.
