The Sóller Epic
Puig Major, Sóller and the finest tarmac on the island.
The full Tramuntana traverse: Femenia, the long drag to the Puig Major tunnel, the drop into Sóller and the climb back over Coll de Sóller. Nearly two and a half thousand metres up, on roads that were built for cycling.
What to expect
The Sóller loop crosses the heart of the Serra de Tramuntana. From the north the route climbs past Lluc and along the high mountain road below Puig Major — the island's highest peak — before descending to the valley of Sóller and its orange groves. The return brings more climbing, for close to 2,500 metres in a day.
The highlights
The section around Puig Major is the highest road on the island and often the coldest part of the ride, even in spring. The descent into Sóller is long and spectacular. If you have the legs, the old road over the Coll de Sóller, with its long series of hairpins, is one of the classic climbs of Mallorca.
Good to know
Weather in the high mountains can be very different from the coast: carry a jacket and arm warmers even on a sunny day. Sóller is the natural stop for lunch and water before the second half of the day.
Best for
Strong riders, the most scenic big day in the Tramuntana.
